Ready , Set , Hike! Wait are those girls are on the football field? Are y’all ready for the 2017 North Augusta Powder Puff season. Powder Puff is a week long event and girls from every grade level get ready to play some football. When I asked Sophomore Ralph Mabe  his opinion of powder puff,  he said, “It is going to be lit.” This year the freshman and sophomores signed up with  Coach Bush and Coach Butler, the juniors and seniors signed up with Coach Gilstrap. Coaches for this year’s teams are Coach Bush for the Freshman, Coach Williams for the Sophomores, Coach Butler for the Juniors And Coach Croft for the Seniors.  Even some of the football players come out to help teach and prepare the girls for the games.  This event has become a North Augusta tradition.

The history of powder puff dates all the way back to 1972. When its purpose was to get girls to participate more in athletics. The term “powder puff” comes from the “powder puff” used in cosmetics. Pope John XXIII High School in Massachusetts was one of the early schools that took on the growing trend. Normally during the powder puff season the upperclassmen take on the underclassmen. Some schools put the high school girls against the middle school girls. An anonymous sophomore girl told me that “It’s the one time of the year that we can take our anger out on each other.” During this powder puff season the roles change. While the normal football season is going on the boys are the ones on the field and the girls are either cheerleaders, cheering from the bleachers or playing with the band. Freshman Abby Ashe told me, ” Its fun to play and I like it.”

That’s all about to change, the girls are the ones on the field while the boys become their cheerleaders. The girls first hit the field for practice on Monday January 23. All practices  go  from 4:00 to 5:00. This year the games will be played on Thursday, January 26, 2017 and Friday January 27, 2017. The results of these two games determine who will play in the last game. When I asked a group of sophomore band members who they thought would win the games they all agreed that, “It has to be the senior ! Since it is their last year it’s obvious that they would have the calls in their favor, it would look bad if they truly lost.” So, the only question to ask is are you ready for the Powder Puff games? Stay tune for the final scores and who will be playing in the last game. The sophomores dominated over the juniors 21-0. Seniors took the freshman and won 22-16 . Sophomores and seniors go against each other and the juniors and freshman go head to head .

The seniors and sophomores battled it out for the championship on Friday the 27th . Despite their hardest efforts the seniors lost to the sophomores by two touchdowns. The sophomores are the 2017 North Augusta High School Powder Puff champions. This is Coach Zach Williams first Powder Puff championship win. Congratulations to the sophomores girls who went and proved to everyone who owns the field.
