In all of the years here at North Augusta High School we have had plenty of clubs, groups, activities, and sports.  North Augusta High School has a variety of sports such as fishing, golf, football, girls and boys basketball, tennis, soccer, baseball, and more  One sport we’ve never had here, however, is wrestling. North Augusta, along with many other schools in Aiken County, is introducing their new wrestling team as of the 2016-2017 school year, thanks to Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford.

The first year wrestling team at North Augusta is very excited and confident about their first season of wrestling. North Augusta has just recently added the new sport, and they are already preparing for their first scrimmage on Saturday, November 19th at River Bluff High School. Their first real match is Tuesday, November 29, when they will take on the Burke County Bears.

I had a chance to speak with a few of the team members, including Gabe Sautter, junior, who is very excited about having a chance to be part of the team. “There’s a lot of great guys out there. We may not have a lot of experience but we’re all working hard, and we’re going to make NA proud and bring home a region title our first year. I know that I’m, personally, really excited for this season, and I’m ready to get to work and show everybody what North Augusta Wrestling is all about,” he says.

I also spoke with Gabe’s teammate, Brandon Rhodes, junior at NAHS. “Wrestling is unlike any other sport.  With wrestling it’s all one on one, but with baseball or football there’s other people there to pick up your slack. Wrestling isn’t like that and you have to rely on yourself to win the match,” Brandon says. The team is very confident about their first year of wrestling, as they should be with their dedicated coach, Matt Franklin.

Coach Franklin has grown up loving wrestling, and understands the sport very well.  He spoke about the team and how the team came about. “For the first year in North Augusta history there’s a wrestling program, thanks to Dr. Sean Alford at Aiken County Public Schools, the superintendent. He’s the one that stepped up and bought the mats, the gear, warm ups and things like that for all 7 high schools in Aiken County. There are 14 different weight classes and there are JV and varsity matches. We have 14 matches and tournaments planned for the season,” Coach Franklin says.

The wrestling team has a majority of male competitors, though there are a few females who decided they would join as well. Coya, sophomore at North Augusta and one of the few females on the wrestling team, commented, “During practice I need to make myself better because I am one of the few girls on the team. I have to show everyone who’s boss.” Shout out to the females on the team proving that any sport can be co-ed!

The wrestling team practices from 3:45 to 6:15 in the cafeteria Monday-Friday. Practices are tough and they have to make sure they do all of the moves right and get them down before their first scrimmage.

Wrestling was the mystery sport at school. At the beginning of the semester most people didn’t believe the announcement that North Augusta would be getting a wrestling team. Now you can believe it with your own eyes, because its becoming the real deal. So, North Augusta High School students, come out and support the wrestling team in their first season at North Augusta in their first home match on November 29th JV starts at 5:00 PM, and Varsity at 6:00 PM! And, if you’re interested, you can join the wrestling team too!
