On Friday February 19, the Spanish club took five students of North Augusta High School to Augusta State University for a second round of Salsa dancing and Merengue. The Spanish Club invited students to a trip to Augusta State University from 7 to 10 in the evening. The chaperons were Senorita Hughes and Senor Cowart.
This was the second year that the Spanish club goes to this event. Senorita Hughes says, “this was my second year going, I went last year while I was student teaching and I always enjoy it. There were fifty students all over the CSRA who attended and received extra credit from their respective classes. The Hispanic dance class taught Salsa and Merengue from 7 to 8, and from 8 to 10 the students could practice what they learned while dancing to the music of DJ Ricardo
Rodriguez.
Merengue is different from Salsa dancing. Merengue is a style of Latin American music that consists of a two-step beat movement while holding your partner closely together. Merengue was made the official music and dance of the Dominican Republic.
The admission was $5.00 and the dance instructor was Edwin Perez.
Edwin Perez works at A&W where they specialize in private dance instruction in Ballroom, Latin, Salsa, and Swing. They are the CSRA’s number-one spot to have fun and stay healthy. A&E offers a Salsa Boot Camp every second Saturday of the month from 2 to 5 to learn Salsa dancing in one day, and no partner is necessary. Senorita Hughes says that the kids had fun and that the Spanish club at North Augusta High School will continue doing activities such as this.
