Prom. The very word arouses mixed emotions in the minds and hearts of high school students. Some build up prom night as the be all, end all of experiences in their high school career, while others view it as a monument to our own shallowness and conformity. Regardless of which side of the proverbial fence one happens to be, it is still a very important event that takes weeks of planning and hard work.

Everyone knows by now that the magazine sales for this year did not go as well as last year’s, which affected the budget for this Spring’s prom. According to Rachel Ellefson, a leader of the prom committee, “The overall budget went down for the prom since last year because the budget was huge last year, but there was still plenty of money to buy what we needed for our supplies.” Therefore, rest assured that, although the dollars are being stretched, this year’s prom will be just as exceptional, if not better, than last year’s.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4305" src="http://tyjna.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/napoleon_dynamite_image_2-300x220.jpg" alt="Prom is a universal issue that nearly every high school student has to face, thus it often comes up in pop culture. For instance: "I like your sleeves. They're really big."

One sacrifice is that prom will not be at the Community Center again this year because it has gone under renovations and would cost us even more. Emma Jordan says that “the new venue is much bigger and will be super-dooper awesome,” but she cannot say where yet, or else I would be killed. Other than that, the only other sacrifice is that there probably won’t be as many decorations this year, or they may not be as elaborate since there is less money.

For obvious reasons, the theme of this year’s prom cannot be revealed, but there were quite a few various ideas. Such suggestions included: a masquerade, a night in Paris, a night under the stars, a southern theme, and Alice in Wonderland. Whether or not the actual theme is hidden among this list,is not known to this reporter. Emma Jordan was willing to say that “it has never really been done before and it’ll be a blast from the past…”

As previously mentioned, the mere mention of prom raises mixed feelings. Rachel also said that she’s “excited for this year’s prom, but I’m also nervous, being one of the three people in charge of it; it’s a lot of pressure to pull it off and I’m hoping that, in the end, it just comes out the way that we originally wanted it to.”

In contrast, other students are of the same mind as Kaylyn Middleton, who said

“Prom’s fun and everyone loves it, or at least they think they will. It’s just a chance for Mommies and Daddies to spend several hundreds on limousines, hair, dresses, and all of the appropriate accessories, all in order to impress friends and make for the ‘perfect night’ that is unlikely to happen. It also puts unnecessary pressure on people to find a date.”

Either way, this build-up is a high school tradition, whether it is tempered by feelings of anticipation or dread.
