Another Week of College Football, Another Top 5 Upset

The 2009 college football preseason rankings were as accurate as a blind man playing darts. Each week, one of the top five teams have been upset and fallen in the ranks. Week one saw Oklahoma go down while in-state rival Oklahoma State got the axe in week 2. Southern California was the week three victim, and week four claimed two as Ole Miss and Penn State fell.
In week one, #3 Oklahoma was shocked by BYU when their Heisman-winning quarterback went down with a shoulder injury half way through the game. BYU quarterback Max Hall threw a touchdown pass with 3:03 seconds left in the game to give college football its first major upset of the season.
In week two, the Houston Cougars handed the #5 Oklahoma State Cowboys the upset at home. After coming off of an impressive win against the Georgia Bulldogs in their home opener, the Cowboys were stunned with a 45-35 loss. Houston quarterback, Case Keenum, threw for 366 yards and 3 touchdowns.
In week three, Steve Sarkisian got a taste of sweet victory when he upset his former team, the #3 USC Trojans. The game was over when the Huskies’ kicker, Erik Folk, put it through the uprights from 22 yards out with three seconds left to put the Huskies up 16-13.
In week four, the #4 Ole Miss Rebels got upset by the South Carolina Gamecocks during their Thursday night match-up. The Gamecock defense led by Eric Norwood held “Heisman Hopeful” Jevan Snead to 107 passing yards and only seven completions. The Gamecocks came out on top 16-10. The #5 Penn State Nittany Lions were knocked off by the Iowa Hawkeyes. Defensive end Adrian Clayborn blocked a punt and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Hawkeyes added a late field goal to make the score 21-10.
The week five match-up between the #4 LSU Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs is looking more and more like another top 5 upset. After barely escaping Mississippi State with a win, I expect the Bulldogs to put them in their place. If history repeats itself, and it does, then it would seem that another top 5 team will fall from the ranks of the unbeaten.

All while #2 Texas is still going strong. (:
