Detroit fans now have a season to look forward to this year as the Lions  won their first game, 19-14, since Dec. 23, 2007.

Lions’ rookie QB Matthew Stafford had his lows, but made good throws when the Lions needed them the most. He would go on to finish the night with solid stats: 21 of 36 for 241 yards and a TD. “I’m having fun,” he said. “It’s a great game we get to play.”

Detroit was also efficient on third down situations converting 9 of 12 times in the 1st half.  The Lionsalso controlled the clock for 22 of 30 minutes in the 1st half.

The Lions don’t have to worry about matching the longest losing streak in NFL history held by the by Tampa Bay which had 26 straight consecutive losses.

“We not only got the monkey off our back, we got King Kong off our back,” said Lions owner William Clay Ford. “I’m hoping that this gets us over that hump and gives us a winning attitude.”

The Redskins wasted plenty of opportunities to come back and end the Lions’ hopes of ending their losing streak. Redskins head coach Jim Zorn got torched on his decision making that gave the Lions what they needed as they drove 99 yards into the end zone. Zorn accepted a penalty that would have left the Lions with a 50-yard field goal attempt, but instead prolonged the drive and ended with two big plays on Stafford’s 21-yard run and a Stafford TD pass to Johnson.

I didn’t think we’d be denied getting in the end zone and we were,” Zorn said. “But there was no way a team could drive 99 yards on us was my thought.”
