Every Friday night that the Jackets play, you can hear the student section yelling phrases like, “We’re the best!” and singing along to the fight song, “We’ve got a sting that’s strong enough to frighten any foe!” But how does North Augusta really rank when compared to some of the best football teams in the state?
According to highschoolsports.net, the Yellow Jacket varsity football team is ranked thirty-third in the state, which is pretty awesome considering there are two hundred thirty eight teams in South Carolina. This puts the Jackets in the top fourteen percent. The Yellow Jackets’ offense is ranked fifty-sixth, which is still in the top quarter of the state, as well as the defense being rated twenty-ninth, which is in the twelfth percentile.
However, that website hasn’t been updated since the Jackets have taken off to a phenomenal start of a football season. According to scvarsity.rivals.com, North Augusta is the fifth school in the 4A division to be on the lookout for. With a quarterback like Lorenzo Hammonds, and stars like Matt Hazel and Vinny Miller making impact plays throughout the games, who could argue with that? Also, with games against Dutch Fork and White Knoll in the next two weeks (both of whom are 1-3), North Augusta should definitely take these weeks to prepare for Aiken and Irmo. However, Aiken is coming off of two losses, which could impact their season tremendously.
Currently, North Augusta is ranked first in the Region V-AAAA standings, with a record so far of 4-0. Games still to come for North Augusta include Dutch Fork, White Knoll, Irmo, Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Lexington, Richland Northeast, and Aiken.
