You’d be worn out if you played four previous tennis sets (for those who don’t know, a set is playing 6 games of tennis, at least), which can be around three hundred points, right? Especially if you’re playing the number one ranked male tennis player in the world, Roger Federer. Well, apparently exhaustion didn’t set in for Juan Martín del Potro, who is currently ranked sixth in the world. (Oh, did I mention that the two men were playing for the Men’s Singles title in the US Open?)

Juan Martín del Potro not only had to play Federer, he also had to play third ranked player, Rafael Nadal. Nadal and del Potro met on September 13. Juan Martín del Potro showed his strength as a tennis player as he easily defeated Nadal, the 6’1”beast. This is not the first time these two had met this year though. The two played one another in the ATP Sony Ericsson Open, which del Potro won (4-6, 6-3, 6-7, 3-7). Also, del Potro and Nadal played in the ATP Masters Series Rogers Cup, which del Potro also won (6-7, 5-7, 1-6).

When del Potro and Federer walked onto the courts of Arthur Ashe stadium on the evening of September 14, there was no telling who would win. Of course, Federer was expected to play a wonderful match, and expected to take his sixth US Open title. However, del Potro had been playing the best tennis of his life over the course of the summer. Federer proceeded to take the first set (6-3), and put some worry in del Potro. However, del Potro answered the first set and went on to take the second set in a tiebreak (7-6). Federer won the third set (6-4) and del Potro took the fourth set in another tiebreak (7-6). When the fifth set rolled around, del Potro proved his athletic ability and stamina by defeating Federer easily (6-2) and claimed the Men’s Singles title for the US Open.
