Home Field Advantage

It’s a surprisingly cool Friday night at the North Augusta High School football stadium, and despite the loud cheers coming from the student section, for one brief second there is a moment of absolute silence. Not a sound can be heard, other than South Aiken’s head coach’s jaw dropping.

How could this be? It was a mystery to everyone on the visitor’s and home side of the field. How could one team be beating another team so badly? Was it luck, or just skill? Whatever the cause, as night rolled around and the time clock displayed 00 in large, red numbers, the North Augusta Yellow Jackets had beaten the South Aiken Thoroughbreds (thoroughly).

It was evident that South Aiken had been waxed, but what was the cause of this epic beat down? SA head coach, Robert Wrightenberry, told local newspapers that the loss was due to the Thoroughbred defense. “We weren’t playing real physical.” Now lets analyze this statement…

It can only be assumed that Coach Wrightenberry really means what he said, but as we take a look at the stats of Friday night’s game, we realize, fully, that he was showing his team some mercy on the comment. Throughout the night, Demarcus Rouse, who had more than 150 rushing yards, broke tackles and injured South Aiken defensive players. Loranzo Hammonds dominated the sky, completing 17 0f 20 passes, ending the night with an astounding 70 % throwing accuracy.

North Augusta’s offense, quite obviously, dominated the gridiron Friday night. They’re pretty raw,” was the answer given when fullback Ricky Cervantez was asked what he thought about the North Augusta doom-squad defense. What’s the proof behind this statement? South Aiken only gained a total of 19 yards the first half. That’s less than two first downs…pretty raw indeed.

Final score: 42-14. Next week, the gang faces its stiffest test of the season in a home game against Strom Thurmond. Maybe it was South Aiken’s defense, perhaps their offense. Whatever the cause, be it home field advantage or skillful play, we will soon find out… during next week’s game, during another Friday night football extravaganza. Stay tuned.
