And the moon man for Best Female Video went to…Taylor Swift.
The exuberant teenager glowed with pride as she walked up to accept her award. She gripped her shiny award tightly and began to speak about how proud and thankful she was; halfway through her speech, a man in black jumped on stage. It’s Kanye West, prepared to make a fool of himself, once again.
He grabbed the microphone from her and blabbed, “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time, one of the best videos of all time!”
The camera panned to Beyonce’s mortified face, she mouthed, “Oh no he didn’t.” She was just as shocked as the rest of the audience, amazed at what they had heard.
Kanye was booed for a short time before he returned to his seat and the crowd stood and cheered for Taylor. Taylor stood on stage, embarrassed and humiliated, on the verge of tears.
Publicity stunt or not, this was simply a rude act of ignorance. Kanye’s video was up for two more nominations, and every time his video was played, boos erupted from the fans; Kanye really put his foot in it this time. Some even chanted “Taylor, Taylor, Taylor.”
At the end of the show, Beyonce claimed her moon man and began her own speech; the crowd expected the typical thank you’s, but Beyonce threw a curve ball. She was nostalgic about her days when Destiny’s Child was nominated and she was only 17, “I remember how excited I was for that nomination, so I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment.” The crowd exploded in cheers of stunned approval. Taylor was able to make her acceptance speech the right way, with no interruptions from ignorant, song-stealing, obnoxious men.
At least Taylor Swift writes her own songs and doesn’t use auto-tune, Kanye!
