The Spanish students were encouraged to take Salsa dancing lessons by their Spanish teachers, who offered extra credit. Over twenty people attended the lessons. Once everyone was there, the instructors separated the guys on one side and the girls on the other.
Matt Watson and Haley Rollins were the instructors who came from an organization called “Ballroom in Motion.” The lessons started at 6:45 and ended at 8:45. Each person learned their part respectively. The students danced with their partners, and then moved on to dance with the next person in line.
The music was Salsa, but they also danced Rumba. Rumba is a Cuban dance that derives from an African style. Senior Tevin Middleton says, “Salsa was very fun and different. I think we should have more stuff like that in our school; I would definitely do it again.”
The idea of Salsa dancing lessons came from the Spanish department. They usually do it every year because students seem to like it. Senora Hughes took care of all the preparations. Senor Cowart says, “It was a really good turnout, and a lot of people showed up.”
There are no current plans for the next lessons, but there is a good chance that it may happen again. The students seemed to enjoy the evening learning how to dance Salsa. Sophomore Kelsie Blocker says, “Usually I am an uncoordinated person, but the instructors were really talented and it was fun to watch them. I had a great time.”
