If you haven’t seen Jay Leno’s new talk show…don’t. I consider myself to be a person who is humored easily. I will laugh at almost anything, except Leno. Most people have heard the awful reviews about Leno’s new talk show, The Jay Leno Show. Mary McNamara of LA Times says “It’s not a good sign when the Bud Light commercial is funnier than the comedy show it interrupts.”

Leno starts out his poor excuse of a show with a monologue filled with “jokes.” Some of jokes include ridiculous photo shopped pictures. On Friday 13th, 2009 one such picture was of a log cabin school with giant rats all over it. Leno joked that “the school had to shut down because of a rat problem”, then waited for the laughs. No one is laughing Jay, no one.

After Leno gets done reciting his monologue he moves on to a guest. His guest stars prove to be one of the highlights of the hour. Some of guests include Tom Cruise, Miley Cyrus, Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Rhianna, and Halle Berry. The guest stars are probably the only reason that someone would purposely tune in. But even these interviews lack comedy. The guest themselves seem to know that this show is as about as successful as 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks.

But wait! It gets worse! The band that plays during the show seems to have a hard time understanding what kind of music is appropriate to play at certain times. The band shows great music talent but they play the wrong melodies at the wrong time. After Leno states his punch line, instead of the usual small drum and cymbal bit, the band breaks out into a full bass solo.  This is an obvious attempt at originality, one that is an obvious failure.

Many will remember Leno’s Tonight Show. Surprisingly this show was much funnier than his new show, and received much better ratings. Leno has remarked that he would take back over the Tonight Show if he was asked. Even he knows that The Jay Leno Show is going nowhere.

Not surprisingly, The Jay Leno Show’s rating are in the basement…they lost to Sponge Bob. That’s right, a the talking sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea is funnier than Jay Leno.

If Leno could bring in some fresh comedy it is possible that he could raise his show from the ruins. For those of you who still have a desire to watch The Jay Leno Show it airs on weeknights at 10 p.m. on NBC.
